Sodexo
Nourishing the bodies and minds of 41,000 Salem-Keizer students

Sodexo
Student achievement starts with nutrition. Well-nourished students perform better in the classroom. That's why Sodexo is so dedicated to providing healthy, nutritious offerings in our school's cafeteria. A leader in K-12 food service Sodexo employs more registered dietitians than any other public company in America. Professionally trained chefs create and kid-test new recipes every day to make sure our students have fresh, delicious and nutritious meals, including school breakfast in cafeterias, classrooms and grab-and-go selections.

Sodexo and their team of dedicated customer service oriented individuals have done an incredible job extending their partnership to the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation as well.

Sodexo partners with the local masons to produce the Awesome Breakfast at the annual Awesome 3000.  Making sure families have a comfortable place to fuel their bodies after the big run is an important way to give back to the school district community. Sodexo also provides the outstanding reception for our award-winning Crystal Apple nominees at the annual Crystal Apple Awards each fall.  This opportunity allows their own award winning chefs a chance to showcase their skill and talent in an entirely different venue.  Those same chefs join us at Where the Sidewalk Begins on First Wednesdays with a barbeque to help celebrate the monthly themes of GoDowntown.

Dave Harvey, Delores Tesky and Nancy Satalich are the local faces of Sodexo, and they are supported by a regional team of Steve Martini and John Stone.  Their commitment to customer service and full partnership are the models for all industry.  "When it comes to dedicated customer relations, even businesses like Les Schwab and Nordstrom could pick up a few new tips from Dave and his team, "says Tyke Hagedorn, Gallery/Gift Shop Manager.  "They have made our business of supporting the school district even more gratifying. They are a true partner with us every step of the way. I truly look forward to every contact I have with Dave and his team."

Sodexo is also the cheerleader for all things that benefit our local kids.  Whether it's helping open the smoothie bar at Where the Sidewalk Begins, attending and supporting fundraisers for the local bond measure and teacher grant ceremony or simply urging employees to contribute to school supply drives; Sodexo humbly and enthusiastically leads by example.

This extra service to the district is staggering when you realize the volume of food and nutrition programs they provide in day to day service.  Sodexo, a self supporting program that does not use General Fund dollars serves an astonishing average number of meals each day!

Breakfast 8,400            Lunch 40,000

After School Suppers 107,000    Summer Feeding Program 800

Sodexo has also created age-specific dining programs for elementary, middle school, and high school students, such as:

Kid's Way Café
Colorful, bold images of fruits and vegetables greet elementary students. Sodexo chefs understand flavor profiles of young palates and create menus to match them. Whole-grain cereals with no added sugar, bagels with low-fat cream cheese and a variety of fresh fruits may be on the menu for breakfast. Chicken nuggets with whole-grain breading, baked potatoes bars with nutritious vegetables such as broccoli may be among the multiple entrée choices for lunch.

E.D.Z (Energy Download Zone)
Middle-school students enjoy a variety of tween-aged favorites, including fresh deli offerings, entrée salads, and pizza with turkey or vegetables, low-fat cheese and whole-wheat dough. Sodexo prepares energy-packed meals for the pre-teen crowd. À la carte items meet or exceed National Child Nutrition Standards criteria for healthy snacks and beverages.

CrossRoads
Cafeterias in high schools are transformed in to dining halls serving fresh, fun food when Sodexo manages your food services. Teens enjoy a variety of made-to-order sandwiches and salads, pasta bars with multiple options for sauces and protein, even exhibition cooking such as stir-fry for lunch. Breakfast may include made-to-order omelets, waffle bars, or breakfast burritos with low-fat turkey and eggs.

We say chef's hats off to our friends and partners at Sodexo!

Summer 2009 Enrichment Academy

The Enrichment Academy is one of the Salem-Keizer Education Foundation’s educational programs and is supplemented by donations to GEC. The Enrichment Academy’s summer program provides exemplary, challenging and motivating academic experiences for all students. We are pleased to have been able to offer 15 different camps for the summer 2009 session.

Showcased at Where the Sidewalk Begins at 233 Commercial St. NE are works from three of the different camps; Folding Words Together, Exploring Movements With The Masters and Mural Magic.

Folding Words Together

You can’t play with your food, but in Folding Words Together, you can play with your words! In this camp, they explored different poetry formats and figurative language and became collectors of words. Students explored the world of poetry through self expression in poems such as the “I Am” poems, onomatopoeia and more traditional forms such as haiku and diamante. In this camp, the students used pictures, words and color to showcase their talent.

This camp was taught by Diane Miller.

Exploring Movements With The Masters

This class was a hands-on glimpse of the Art History Masters. Students saw how art has been viewed as everything from science, to an expression, to the pure act of creating it. They were taught about a few key players of the influential art movements while they created works based on those principles. The students were given the opportunity to create expressions through drawing, painting and printmaking. Some of the artists included Leonardo Da Vinci, Vincent Van Gogh and Jackson Pollock.

This camp was taught by Wendi DeYoung.

Mural Magic

Students learned to use a variety of fused fabrics with greeting cards and iris paper folding techniques. They learned to coordinate colors, patterns and materials to create fantastic one-of-a-kind designs. The possibilities for these creations were endless and in this four day session, the students were inspired in finding their creative side.

This camp was taught by Angela Sotelo.
